Let me take you back to 1938. An enterprising young man named Walter Zapp – toiling away as an engineer in Riga, Latvia – introduced a brilliantly small “subminiature” camera to the world. This tiny technological wonder – using a micro-sized 8x11mm film cartridge – soon caught the favor of spies and intelligence agents the world over. They prized its easily concealed size, ease of use (even in tight spots and tense situations), and excellent image quality – especially for photographing documents and troop movements. Certainly, you’ve seen the 007 movie “On Her Majesty's Secret Service,” where Sean Connery pulls out a Minox and shoots a map that shows where the “Angels of Death” are set to release their biological agent. Well, here’s two real-lfe Minox trivia that’s sure to delight any spycraft lover (via BBCh2g2):
-- Minoxes are the cameras used by real life spies the Falcon and the Snowman. The CIA admits that the KGB provided one to John A Walker Jr, which he used to photograph sensitive National Security Agency codes.
-- A Minox III was found, and then mysteriously not found, among the possessions of Lee Harvey Oswald, assassin of JFK.
The three gorgeous pieces that you see before you are the direct descendants of this original Minox spy camera, and actively keep the classic subminiature flame burning. The silver MX is the entry-level model, with an easy fixed shutter and powerful electronic flash. The black ECX is a step up – offering a long exposure capability, aperture priority metering & German handcraftsmanship. It also offers that signature push-pull film advance – which was made famous by the great 007! At the top of the chain is the gorgeous titanium-framed TLX – an absolute masterpiece with the highest lens quality and fantastic shutter speed range.
Shooting 8”x11” subminiature film is a totally special and incredible analog sensation. Pulling this tiny mechanical wonder out of your pocket and charming the pants off of your subjects is only half the story – as the images are absolutely unique. Each shot has a truly amazing look – with beautiful saturated colors and a rugged film grain. It’s no wonder why this unique format was favored by such discerning folk as James Bond, Dwight D. Eisenhower (President of the United States), Prince Philip (Duke of Edinburgh), and Billy F. Gibbons (legendary bearded guitarist of ZZ-Top!) Although you can’t get this film processed just anywhere, there are still plenty of places in the USA and Europe which offer film sales and development via mail order. Believe us – it’s worth the wait!
