Handy Film Tasting Tips
Get a taste of some Fuji film vintages
Ageing is something that comes to us all. The ever-turning hand of time does not escape your films either. Just because they pass their expiry date it does not have to mean the end. On the contrary expired film can take on a whole new lease of life – with some amazing and unexpected results! We recommend that rather than resisting the ageing process, you should embrace it! Take the first step by experimenting with some of our fine Fuji vintage films.

FUJI Velvia 120 and 35mm
There isn’t a film more proud to be saturated. In fact the Velvia screams saturation from the rooftops! Cross-processing gives you that wild Fuji blue-green shift and normal processing never disappoints.

FUJI Provia 120 and 35mm
The Provia speaks volumes without hitting you over the head with saturation. When normally processed you will be struck by the trueness of the colour reproduction and when cross-processed it wears the trademark Fuji green-blue shift.

FUJI Superia 100 120 and 35mm
The Superia’s subtle charm should not be under-estimated. Fine-grained and vivid, its beautiful natural colours have the capability to look almost ethereal.

FUJI Neopan 400 CN 120
The Neopan 400 is a good B&W all-rounder. Speedy, fine-grained with a superb finish. Another bonus is that you can develop it in cheapo C41 colour chemicals. Alright!

FUJI Neopan 1600 35mm
Now this is a film to rave about! A luscious gritty lo-fi character with noir appeal. It’s super high speed makes it ideal for low-light, hand-held shooting.

FUJI Pro 160 35mm
Now the ‘Pro’ part isn’t just a name. The colours, contrast and dynamic range are the business. Distinctively, the film keeps the velvety-smooth fine grain you would expect from a much slower film.

Film tasting Tips and Tricks
Step 1 Carefully unwrap your vintage film and place your nose 3 centimetres away from the film. Keep your mouth open. The aroma should bounce off the film and directly into your nostrils. Have a good sniff. Any particularly dodgy whiffs are a sign that perhaps the film not only expired but has in fact already left this world to meet its film-maker in the sky.
Step 2 Insert your vintage into your camera of choice and give it a swirl, or alternatively just wind it on. This film has been waiting a long time this moment so shoot the hell out of it.
Step 3 After development, its time to sample. For best results hold your photographs towards the light. Look for the differences in the brilliance and intensity of the colours, as well as the overall clarity. Increased graininess, smudging, blobbing, streaking and hallucinogenic effects may also be experienced.

Remember the more films you taste the better you will become at this entire sensory process!
