The Return of the Pet-Love Film Galleries!
What’s the Film of the Fortnight?
There is just something about expired film.
As a wise Italian once said, “old wine and friends get better with age”. We think the same can also be said for a lot of films. Or perhaps it is more accurate to compare out-of-date film to an aging member of the family, both get increasingly more unpredictable and have the tendency to go a bit nuts! We prefer to see all expired film gems as ‘vintages’ begging to be sampled. So we invite you to step inside our very own Film Cellar full of vintage emulsions just waiting to be uncorked.
Prost!
Vintage Fuji Film Grotto
Fuji Tungsten 64 120
A full-bodied blue blush is what you will get with the Tungsten. Designed to make the yellow light from the bulb appear white. During the day, its intense blue cast cancels the yellow, giving your shots the moody blues. Experiment with a yellow flash, and watch the subjects turn to white in the midst of a sea of blue.

Fuji Astia 100 120 Slide
The Astia is real peach, and we’re not just talking about its gorgeous skin tones. This Medium Format film represents subtle, natural elegance in this crazy saturated world. Smooth, muted colours with low contrast and sharp resolution are the Astia’s calling card. Cross-process it though and you can still expect the full Fuji blue-green-red-cream treatment.

Fuji Provia 100 120 & Fuji Provia 100 35mm
When you don’t want to be slapped around the face with saturation, but equally don’t fancy the understatement of the Astia, this vintage is just the thing! The best of both worlds and does the fuji cross-processing thingy like a pro.

Fuji Velvia 100 120 & Fuji Velvia 100 35mm
The Velvia, the last and probably the loudest Fuji slide on the menu. It screams saturation and cockily demands your admiration even when normally processed. Cross-processing turns the crazy Fuji slide effect up a notch.

Film testing Tips and Tricks
Step 1 Carefully unwrap your vintage film and place your nose 3 centimetres away from the film. Keep your mouth open. The aroma should bounce off the film and directly into your nostrils. Have a good sniff. Any particularly dodgy whiffs are a sign that perhaps the film not only expired but has in fact already left this world to meet its film-maker in the sky.
Step 2 Insert your vintage into your camera of choice and give it a swirl, or alternatively just wind it on. This film has been waiting a long time this moment so shoot the hell out of it.
Step 3 After development, its time to sample. For best results hold your photographs towards the light. Look for the differences in the brilliance and intensity of the colours, as well as the overall clarity. Increased graininess, smudging, blobbing, streaking and hallucinogenic effects may also be experienced.

Remember the more films you taste the better you will become at this entire sensory process!
