A LITTLE BIG BIGGER & A LITTLE BIT BETTER

Created in the early 1980’s, the Spectra system was designed to propel Polaroid’s consumer-grade instant film into a higher level of quality and resolution. Each photo’s image area is 9.2 x 7.3cm, versus 7.9x7.9cm for a standard square-format Polaroid shot. Not only was the print-area increased, but the resolution and color rendition was improved as well. This was further advanced by the cameras of the Spectra system. Priced higher and aimed at a more discerning market, the Spectra series featured higher quality optics and more solid metering for an overall better resulting image. From those early days, quite a few Spectra cameras were released to support this slamming new system. But none were quite as striking as 2001’s Spectra 1200FF. With its post-futuristic silver shape and a unique fold-up convertible body, the 1200FF is in a class of its own. The shots are awesome, the operation is simple and reliable, and the camera is one of the most enjoyable Polaroids to shoot and handle. Alas, the digital photography juggernaut and Polaroid’s recent tough times meant that the 1200FF was discontinued just a few years after its release – although the Spectra film format is still actively produced and distributed throughout the world.
