Beijing Barcelona St. Petersburg Montreal Saarbruecken

Dear friends,

The decision had to be made, and so the unrestrained lomographic forces of this world have unanimously proclaimed 2004 to be the year of LomoTravel-Fever. Why? The consequences of the legendary LomoTours are still very much with us. There are fewer and fewer blanks to be found on the lomographic map of the world, while the tools of Lomography and its visions are spreading relentlessly to even the most eruptive craters and far-flung of ridges.

It would be lomographically impossible to compile a full schedule of all the possible and impossible projects and excursions on the agenda this year. We run through the most exorbitant locations.

So this is our general proposal for 2004: First, save your travel budget, or if you haven't got one ask your granny for a little financial assistance, and enter the dates in your diary! Secondly, select your favourite escapades from below a.s.a.p., the ones you'd like to join. Thirdly, get in touch with us right away to let us know which detail-updates you'd like to receive in the weeks to come.

Lomography World Congress in Beijing, June 2004

Two things are fixed. The Lomography World Congress is, as usual, going to be a most wild, most colourful, most creative and most challenging assembly of Lomographers and friends from all over the planet: A magnificent variety of individuals, enthusiastic celebrations, competition challenges, a LomoWall presentation of impressive proportions, not to mention the world class battling between the Lomographic World League Finalists. And it is fixed that the snapshot-hunters are going to conquer Beijing, and carefully scour its 3,000 year history as a city, 1,000 years as a capital city and then leading up to its driving development to become the cosmopolitan metropolis that it now is. Although it remains to be seen whether the Great Wall of China or the magnificent lomographic one will win. The World Congress will certainly be doing everything possible and then some to ensure that justice is done to this unique opportunity for an extensive experience of the city, its secrets and its inhabitants.

The date hasn't been 1000% fixed yet, but is scheduled for the beginning of June.

In order to sort out the details in the programme and because of all the necessary formalities we need to have a rough idea in advance of the number of Lomographers planning to travel to Beijing. So please make a provisional reservation (non-committal – You can cancel anytime). Everyone who gets in touch with us will start receiving regular information updates and organizational instructions.

Review Lomography at Max Ophüls Film Festival

A project by that cineastic LomographyAmbassador Joachim Trapp from Berlin. Here is his report: In February 2004, 60 stalwart participants heeded the Ambassador's call to face the LomoMax challenge at the 25th Max Ophüls Film Festival in Saarbrücken, Germany. Kitted-out with Lomos, they devoted themselves to hunting down suitable motifs to complete their A-Z list during the four days and nights of the festival. All the films were collected on the last day and the fastest film-processor east or west of the Rio Pecos (actually the Saar), Thomas Wilding, did his utmost. And the Lomographs, which were still warm, were knotted together by a team of well-coordinated knot-tiers to make a gigantic carpet. A colourful mosaic consisting of 2,000 Lomographs provided a fascinating image of festival life. At the roaring farewell party, Alexander Karle was declared the winner of the LomoMaxCompetition.

Together with the winning film at the festival (MUXMÄUSCHENSTILL by Marcus Mittermeier, Germany) the Lomographs left for Berlin, where they have been presented to an astonished but adoring public at the 54th International Film Festival, Berlin (the Berlinale).
