In May 2003 Lomographers accompanied the Austro-Luxembourgeois film-lady Bady Minck to the international premiere of her newest film 'In The Beginning Was The Eye' at the Cannes film festival. The magnificent film, also featuring the Action Sampler, and the film city Cannes - unsurprisingly the perfect opportunity to initiate a Lomographic film project.

The avant-garde filmmaker collected 1,500 Austrian postcards and, in a fantastic film, left its protagonist, the poet Bodo Hell, to struggle alone with the dimensions: the two sides of the postcards, i.e. the images and the words. The poet breaks out of his world of words, slips into the photo on a postcard, gets lost in a labyrinth of images, and races at high speed over mountains and through valleys at a rate of 160 postcards views per minute. At the end Bodo succeeds in imagining a landscape for himself and in entering it. But when he leaps into the physical landscape he loses his own physical dimension: He is reduced to the flatness of a two-dimensional figure in a photograph, at the mercy of the wild landscape.

In Cannes we put ourselves at the mercy of the wild landscape of people in and around the world of film, the endless parties and boundless sensual tumult, and shot almost as many Lomographs as Bodo consumed postcards.

And because we were so drawn into Bady's postcard world, we have started a worldwide appeal for the best LomoActionShots to be sent to Bady Minck as a  postcard so she can soon make a LomographicPostcard film.

In the heart of the lisboetas it is Santo António who reigns. He is the patron saint of marriages and of Lisbon, the city where he was born and which accordingly dedicates a city holiday to his memory on the 13th of June every year. The city dances, has fun, reads speeches, smells the basil, eats grilled sardines and Lomographs.

Get ready for another LomoLisbonWeekend challenge: 12-14 June, 2003. Ambassadors Ana and Sonia have prepared a tough challenge-kit and a non-stop party on 21 June at the Bicaense Café, with all-night visuals, a prize-giving ceremony and a LomographicMural, to be on display until 21 July, 2003.

Location:
Bicaense Café
Rua da Bica de Duarte Belo 42 (elevador da Bica)
Lisbon, Portugal

Newsflash: Minutes ago, the jury session for the Austrian cooking feast project has ended. As expected we received hundreds of overwhelmingly impressive submissions for the best cooking party concepts. During hours of a meticulous selection process the 21 best of the best were chosen. Just to name a few premises: Naked cooking games, the axis of the good taste countries, the four Strudel women, cooking at the border (literally), a feast in four opera acts.

Austria’s minds and kitchens are brewing hot and the party makers will get in action soon (winners announced online next week)! The Lomography cooking book compiling the results of the exclusive parties in stories and images, to be presented in autumn 2003, promises to be unbearably delightful…
